Nicki Minaj And deadmau5 Pull Outrageous Fashion Antics On The Grammys Red Carpet

Unlike the other major red carpets of awards shows season, the Grammys cultivate an atmosphere that almost invites their attendees to create a little more of a scene, to get a little more outrageous. [Insert jazz hands.] While there was nothing quite like Lady Gaga’s egg entrance at last year’s show, Nicki Minaj and deadmau5 made splashes of their own on this year’s step and repeat. Whether you loved or loathed their sartorial choices, you can’t help but admit you felt some kinda feelings about both of these button-pushing ensembles.

NICKI MINAJ PONTIFICATES

Any time you make ANY sort of unprovoked religious reference, you’re strapping yourself into a speeding train headed straight for guaranteed wave-making and feather-ruffling (*COUGH*Alejandro video*COUGH*). Not that those are necessarily new things to Miss Nicki Minaj, mastermind behind “Stupid Hoe” and that 2011 VMA Candy Raver outfit. The MC graced the red carpet in a one-of-a-kind scarlet satin Versace robe. Emblazoned with the label’s signature Medusa head across the skirt and worn with matching short sequin-embellished gloves, Nicki appeared to be giving a “Little Red Riding Hood” homage when spotted alone. And then she was joined by her escort: a Pope look-a-like. Afagdfakjgkl WHAT??!? Immediately, the black trim mutates into a rosary bead reference and Nicki into a Roman cardinal. We have no idea what kind of statement she’s making with this move, but she sure made one. Though, granted, if Donatella Versace showed up on our doorstep with a custom made ANYTHING for us, we’d have a pretty difficult time turning it down.

DEADMAU5 PRANKS

Even though the Grammys’ dress code isn’t exactly set in stone, we wouldn’t exactly say that a T-shirt and jeans are standard fare for the event. Nevertheless, we’re pretty obsessed with deadmau5′s look. Not because we think it’s ground-breaking or breathtaking or whateverwhatever. We love it because beneath his hallmark mau5 headdress, he has Grammy Award-winning Skrillex’s REAL DEAL phone number scrawled across his chest.

LOLZ times INFINITY BAZILLION THOUSAND. Added bonus? That jesting “u mad bro?” quip right underneath. *sigh* I mean, this is some George Clooney x Brad Pitt prank magic, and we LOVEEEE it.

CARRIE UNDERWOOD IN GOMEZ-GRACIA

Carrie Underwood’s rise to fame has been so much fun to watch. She’s a sweet gal and a class act who never fails to add a little glitz to her awards ensembles. For the Grammys, she chose a white Gomez-Gracia gown with silver sequins that covered everything but her neck. Although conservative in cut, the look was one of uptown elegance. Designer Patricia Gomez-Gracia trained with Alexander McQueen, and we’re certain we’ll be seeing more of her ladylike dresses in the future. Big ups on Carrie’s black lace clutch which breaks up the snow-like effect.

ADELE IN GIORGIO ARMANI

We are SO GLAD to see Adele again! Making her vocal comeback after a tough year that resulted in having to undergo surgery to save her trademark pipes, the “Rolling in the Deep” power singer rolled up to the red carpet in a gorgeous Giorgio Armani sparkle number with three-quarter sleeves, a cinched waist, and to-the-floor length. Tipped out in Christian Louboutin heels, Harry Winston diamonds, and long silver nails, this is a classic and beautiful look in keeping with her sound. Love the curled blonde hair, long lashes, and crimson lips too. GLA-MAHHHH.

KELLY ROWLAND IN ALBERTA FERRETTI

Kelly Rowland looks amazing. FULL STOP. Aside from her enviable physique and captivating smile (this is how you do it!), her peaches n’ cream Alberta Ferretti dress with silver flower appliques, mesh neckline, and soft draping is so insanely beautiful. Instead of going for a pulled-back updo—like many others on Grammy night—she opted for the half up and down look with voluminous curls that framed her Lorraine Schwartz chandelier earrings. This look is all about playing up the accessories to match the embellishments on the dress (including that oversize silver ring), and we j’adore it.

PARIS HILTON IN BASIL SODA

It’s Paris Hilton! At the Grammys!! And WHOA does she look like a lady. This white Basil Soda dress accented in gold floral motifs is STUNNING; in fact, we don’t think we’ve ever seen Paris look more elegant or less gimmicky. This feels like a metamorphosis, a style transformation if you will, and we like the new Paris with her muted makeup and low chignon. She’s a true city of light and we hope she keeps up the good work.

DEADMAU5

Yes, we’re putting Deadmau5 on our Best Dressed list. You guys, not only is he wearing his characteristic, giant bug-eyed mouse smiley face on his head but also? Uuuuum, do you see his t-shirt? It has a phone number with the question, “u mad bro?” spelled out underneath it. Um, this phone number belongs to electronic music artist (and recent Grammy winner/slayer) Skrillex. Is there something going on here boys? Is there a beef we’re unaware of? We’re guessing there’s more to this madness but applaud Dead’s streamlined black tee (which is the right length for his dark jeans), 1990s chain, and colorful tattoos. But, really, what’s going ON here Mau5? It’s a Grammy style mystery…
